Questions of identity often plague us- Who am I? Where do I fit in? What do I truly desire from life? What is my purpose?
For some, identity is tied to our jobs, careers, the multi-faceted roles we fulfil and our productivity. Yet, when stripped of these external markers, we sometimes feel a deep sense of loss, uncertainty and often times deep sadness. It feels like shaky grounds and failure with a touch of fear, leaving us vulnerable.
Others are a combination of experiences, relationships, environment and inherited beliefs. However, these perceptions can become distorted by past trauma, societal norms or cultural influences, thus clouding our true essence as we mistakenly attribute them as components of our identity.
The lens through which we view the world often shapes our beliefs and behaviours. What lens are you seeing the world through? What do you believe to be true versus what are actual facts? Sometimes, our behaviour subtly reveals our beliefs and feelings about ourselves, projecting them without even knowing. The truth is, we have all endured pain in various forms, which inadvertently influences how we interact with others. This can lead us to be either compassionate or less trusting, ultimately shaping our character.
Who are we without the titles, relationships or past experiences? This question has been weighing on my mind recently, leading me back to my identity in Christ. I am reminded that I am who God says I am. He tells me I am His child, a masterpiece- fearfully and wonderfully made, the one He loves the most, the light of the world, a visionary and much more. With my identity rooted in Christ, I can live a life of impact and service, especially as I pursue my purpose, knowing that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
As Christians, our mandate is to go forth and make disciples of all nations by sharing the gospel with the world. Individually, God has a unique purpose for each of us. This purpose is revealed through a personal relationship with God, where His plans for our lives unfold. You might argue, “But I am already working and love what I do”. While you may indeed love your current occupation, aren’t you curious to discover the reasons behind your creation and unlock your full potential?
Just as engaging with a car dealer unveils a vehicle’s special and hidden features, connecting with God unveils our true capabilities and purpose. He created us, knowing our strengths, weaknesses, and untapped potential. Isn’t it worth exploring how we might be underutilising ourselves?
Having a relationship with God is the most beautiful experiences in life. It doesn’t promise a life devoid of pain and struggles. No. However, God will walk you through your struggles, teaching you how to love yourself and others. He will strengthen you, help you and guide you on this journey called life.
God loves you immensely, so much that He sent His only Son, Jesus, to die for your sins. He desires to communicate with you and be your friend. If you are curious to learn more about God’s plan for you or wish to recommit your life to Christ, please consider saying the following prayer:
Lord Jesus, I love You. I believe that You are the son of God and that You died for my sins. I receive Jesus into my heart as my Lord and Saviour. I surrender my life to You. I declare that the power of sin is broken over my life, and my past is behind me. Thank You for Your forgiveness. From this day forward, I am a child of God, and I will become everything You have created me to be. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Best believe there’s a celebration in Heaven for your return home! His love will transform your life and light your path forward.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:11-13 NIV.
